Bawdy Badges
Although they appear rather rude to modern minds these badges were important to medieval people as it was believed that wearing them would deter evil spirits. For more information on this type of badge please refer to the ‘History’ section of the website.
X2-A winged and legged phallus creature with crown and bell
The phallus bird is a motif that can be traced back at least as far as the early 5th century BC. The Romans used phallus badges for exactly the same apotropaic reasons as has been given above, and the phallus bird was one of their most commonly used motifs.
